Making CBD edibles is fun and fairly easy. Unfortunately, there are still a few ways we tend to screw them up.
People are starting to get more experimental with CBD edibles, trying all kinds of different recipes. While standbys like cookies and brownies are still popular, a quick online search will bring up everything from marinara sauce to salad dressing to potato chips. We think that’s great. The more CBD edibles, the better.
But with that increase in edibles, we’re also seeing more edibles going wrong. That’s bad. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Let’s learn from the world’s mistakes together. Here are the top 3 ways to make CBD edibles that actually taste good.
Always Decarb Your CBD Edibles
Don’t use raw hemp for CBD edibles. If you choose to make edibles from scratch, by using hemp flower, you need to cook it first.
That’s because the CBD in raw hemp is in the form of cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), which does not produce the same effects as CBD. When hemp is cooked, it goes through a process called decarboxylation, and the structure of the cannabinoids changes, from CBDA to CBD.
By not “decarbing,” you’ll be stuck with CBDA, which does not offer the same benefits as CBD. That means no feelings of calm, or focus, or relaxation, making the whole process kind of pointless.
The most popular way to decarb is by making CBD-infused butter. You can find recipes online, but keep in mind it can be tricky because CBD loses its potency at high temperatures.
Fortunately, there’s an easier way — CBD oil.
For an Easier Option, Use CBD Oil
If you use CBD oil, you don’t have to worry about decarbing. That’s because CBD oil has already been through the decarboxylation process.
And the professionals will probably be able to do a better job at it, since, as studies show, getting quality CBD through decarbing involves careful management of heat and time. There are a lot of factors at play here. Our advice: Leave it to the pros. Buy CBD oil.
Make Sure You Stir
You need to stir to get an even distribution of CBD. No matter what you’re cooking, CBD won’t just disperse evenly on its own. You will need to stir especially well if you make something liquid or high in water content since CBD is not water-soluble.
The result, if you fail to follow this tip, is that some parts will have hundreds of mgs of CBD and other parts will have little or none. This is worst-practice for edibles. You want to get a consistent dose of CBD.
With that in mind, make sure you’re adding the correct amount to begin with. Aim for about 10 mg of CBD per serving. This may involve some math.
And Add Plenty of Flavor
Some people just assume that because they’re making CBD brownies or cookies, it has to taste like a substandard version of the real thing. This is wrong. The truth is that CBD edibles can and do taste great.
CBD or full-spectrum hemp oil has a subtle, nutty flavor that can be incorporated into lots of different edibles, sweet and savory.
Honey pairs well with CBD oil, as does fruits — that’s why CBD gummies taste so good. As for spices, try cinnamon or turmeric.
If you’re making something savory — say a sauce like marinara or pesto — also don’t be afraid to add extra seasoning and spice. Try to throw a little more on there than what you’d normally use.
For an easy way to add taste, try a flavored CBD oil. Green Lotus Lemon and Orange CBD tinctures use fruit terpenes, so you get a natural fruit flavor. You can find other flavors out there, too, from other companies. Fruit-flavored tinctures are an easy way to help whatever you’re making taste like something other than hemp.
Quality CBD Oil Helps Too
If you find that your CBD oil has a bitter taste and you’re having trouble masking it with sweeteners or seasoning, it may be that you’re not using good CBD oil. Don’t skimp on this part of the edibles. Buy CBD that’s organic and third-party lab tested.
